Rams' Running Back Room Slim After Soft-Tissue Injuries

Running backs Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson Jr. both suffered soft-tissue injuries over the weekend and will be held out for an undetermined period of time, head coach Sean McVay told reporters Monday.

While the specific nature and severity of the injuries are not immediately clear, any muscle strains this close to the season puts the backs at risk of being inactive or ineffective in Week 1, according to the Pro Football Docs.

Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson Injury Update

McVay did not provide details on the injuries or return timelines, but said both would be shut down until they can run workouts at full-speed.

Henderson Jr. suffered a soft-tissue injury in OTAs that McVay said was lingering from 2021.

The running back suffered a quad strain ahead of Week 13 and was ruled active but didn't play.

Both the 23-year-old Akers and 25-year-old Henderson Jr. also missed time last season with lower-leg injuries.

Akers' ruptured Achilles kept him out until Week 18, while Henderson Jr. missed five games with an MCL sprain he suffered in Week 16.

Both backs played in the Super Bowl but neither were productive, rushing for a combined 17 times for 28 yards.

Kyren Williams Injury Update

Next up in the Rams' depth chart is Jake Funk, who rushed 10 times for 16 yards in the preseason opener, followed by rookie back Kyren Williams.

Williams suffered a broken foot in early June and underwent surgery on June 7.

He was activated from the PUP list last week but will be held out of the preseason as he continues to work his way back.
