Pacers' Bennedict Mathurin to Undergo Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

Indiana Pacers forward Bennedict Mathurin will miss the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery to address a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Mathurin suffered the shoulder injury in the second quarter of the March 5 game against the Dallas Mavericks. He finished the game, but an MRI revealed the labral tear.

Impact on the Pacers

Indiana dropped Thursday’s game against the Timberwolves, its first without Mathurin since Feb. 14. The Pacers are 2-3 without Mathurin this season, with Jarace Walker playing more minutes in his absence.

Mathurin is averaging 14.5 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists this season while shooting 44.6% from the field this season and 37.4% from the 3-point range. He’s also averaging 82.1% from the free throw line.

Other Players With Labrum Injuries

He is the second major player to have his season end with labrum surgery. Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant underwent surgery to address a labral injury he suffered on Jan. 5.

New York Knicks center Julius Randle suffered a dislocated right shoulder with likely labrum damage on Jan. 27. Surgery has been discussed as an option, but Randle appears determined to attempt to play through it at the moment.

Mathurin will miss the next six months but will recover in time for the start of next season.
