NFL Week 3 TNF Preview: Patriots vs Jets | Key Player Health Concerns & Free Pick

NFL

Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season kicks off with a Thursday Night Football showdown between AFC East rivals New England Patriots visiting New York Jets.

Listed below are key injury insights for each team.

New England Patriots - SIC Health Score 78.2

The Patriots carry one of the lowest team SIC Health Score this season going into Week 3, with injury issues on both sides of the ball.

The offensive line is particularly concerning, with left guard Cole Strange not ready for the new season and expected starting center Jake Andrews placed on IR, missing the entire 2024 season. Depth is okay at center with David Andrews, but the OL remains a problem spot with every OL on the injury report this week.

Top WR Kendrick Bourne is in his first year after an ACL tear and will not be 100% for most of the season.

Defensively, their top defensive lineman Christian Barmore is likely out for the season due to blood clots, a significant loss that will weaken the Patriots’ run defense. Starting LB Ja'Whaun Bentley will also miss due to a pec injury.

New England Patriots Key Injury Insights

Cole Strange - G

Cole Strange suffered a torn patellar tendon late in the 2023 season in Week 15, ending his year. He is currently on the Patriots' PUP list and is expected to miss the start of the season. He may not be ready until after the midway point of the season.

Jake Andrews - C

Jake Andrews had a healthy rookie season at center for New England, missing only one game and primarily playing special teams snaps. He was placed on the IR ending his 2024 season after initially being on the Patriots' PUP list with an undisclosed injury.

Ja'Whaun Bentley - LB

Sustained a torn pectoral in Sunday's game and will miss the remainder of the season, there was optimism he might be ready for Week 3 but further evaluation downgraded him to be out the rest of the season.

Christian Barmore - DT

Christian Barmore has been diagnosed with blood clots and has been placed on the teams NFI list, there is no timetable for his return.

New York Jets - SIC Health Score 87.6

The Jets have good news with quarterback Aaron Rodgers returning from an Achilles injury.

Running back Breece Hall is in his second year after an ACL tear and is set to have a breakout year in 2024.

The improved OL, with additions like Tyron Smith, John Simpson, and Morgan Moses, is a massive boon for the Jets, as an injured OL derailed their most recent campaigns.

On defense, major issues have arisen after Week 2. DE Jermaine Johnson will rest of season due to an Achilles tear, with him out both DEs are out making a Jets pass rush hard to come by.

Lead LB C.J. Mosley is nursing a toe injury and likely to miss but there is slim chance he could play through if he gets numbing injection.

New York Jets Key Injury Insights

C.J. Mosley - LB

Sustained an injury in the second quarter of Week 2 matchup with a toe injury, he exited the game and did not return. Did not practice on Tuesday.

Jermaine Johnson - DE

By video expecting right Achilles tendon rupture which would mean surgery and end of his season.

Haason Reddick

Underwent a thumb procedure late in training camp but will be ready for Week 1 - Pro Football Docs expected him to play through with a brace for the first few weeks however he is yet to play due to a contract dispute.
