The defensive line was one of the hardest-hit position groups across the NFL entering the 2026 season. Several teams lost cornerstone interior defenders and promising young linemen to season-ending injuries, dramatically altering pass-rush production and run defense. While some veterans are expected to return at full strength, others face lengthy recoveries that could impact their effectiveness well into 2026.
Nnamdi Madubuike — Baltimore Ravens
Injury: Season-Ending Neck Injury
Madubuike suffered a neck injury during Baltimore's Week 2 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Initially placed on injured reserve with hopes of a return, the injury was later ruled season-ending by head coach John Harbaugh due to its severity.
The injury was particularly significant because Madubuike had developed into one of the NFL's premier interior pass rushers and one of the Ravens' most valuable defensive players. His absence dramatically reduced Baltimore's ability to generate interior pressure and forced younger linemen into expanded roles.
Fortunately, Madubuike underwent successful neck surgery during the 2026 offseason, and doctors have expressed optimism that he will be able to resume playing during the 2026 season.
Given the nature of neck injuries, his recovery will remain one of the league's most closely monitored storylines.
DeWayne Carter — Buffalo Bills
Injury: Torn Achilles
Carter suffered a torn Achilles during training camp before the regular season began, ending his second NFL season before it started.
The former third-round pick entered camp expected to take on a much larger rotational role along Buffalo's interior defensive line. Instead, the Achilles injury made him one of three Bills defensive linemen lost for the season before or during the year.
Achilles injuries remain one of the most challenging recoveries for interior defensive linemen because of the explosion required off the snap. Buffalo will hope Carter regains his lower-body power as he works back into the rotation.
Levi Onwuzurike — Detroit Lions
Injury: Torn ACL
Onwuzurike suffered a torn ACL during training camp and was placed on season-ending injured reserve before the regular season began.
The injury came after he had emerged as one of Detroit's most versatile interior defenders. His combination of size, strength, and positional flexibility had become an important piece of the Lions' defensive front.
An ACL injury is generally more manageable than an Achilles tear for interior defensive linemen, but regaining lateral movement and explosion will remain critical as Onwuzurike works toward returning to Detroit's rotation.
Calijah Kancey — Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Injury: Torn Pectoral Muscle
Kancey's promising season ended in Week 2 after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle against the Houston Texans. An MRI confirmed the tear, surgery was required, and Tampa Bay placed him on season-ending injured reserve.
The injury was another frustrating setback for one of the NFL's most explosive young defensive tackles. Despite battling calf injuries early in his career, Kancey had established himself as one of Tampa Bay's premier interior disruptors thanks to his elite first-step quickness and pass-rushing ability.
Unlike lower-body injuries, a torn pectoral generally allows defensive linemen to return with their explosiveness largely intact once fully healed. Tampa Bay remains committed to Kancey as a foundational piece of its defensive front, exercising his fifth-year option during the 2026 offseason as a strong vote of confidence in his long-term future.
