As the NBA Play-In Tournament approaches, availability—not just talent—will shape which teams extend their seasons. Several contenders are entering this high-stakes window managing injuries to key rotational players, creating ripple effects in lineup construction, usage rates, and overall ceiling.

Philadelphia 76ers: Star Power on Hold, Maxey Carries the Load

The biggest story in Philadelphia is the continued absence of Joel Embiid, who remains out following an appendectomy. Embiid was once again producing at an MVP level this season, averaging roughly 33 points, 10+ rebounds, and elite rim protection. Without him, the Sixers lose their offensive hub and defensive anchor entirely.

Also sidelined is depth big Johni Broome recovering from knee surgery, further thinning the frontcourt rotation.

That leaves Tyrese Maxey as the unquestioned engine. Despite dealing with a finger tendon strain (and playing with a splint), Maxey is available and has taken on a massive role, averaging about 25+ points and 6 assists per game this season. His shot creation and pace will dictate whether Philadelphia can survive without Embiid. Expect heavy minutes and a usage spike, with secondary scoring needing to come from complementary wings and spot-up threats.

Orlando Magic: Defense Tested Without Isaac

Orlando enters relatively healthier among play-in teams but still faces key absences. He’s missed 20 of the last 21 Magic games. Jonathan Isaac remains out with a knee sprain, removing one of the league’s most versatile defenders. Isaac’s impact doesn’t always show in box scores, but his ability to guard multiple positions is central to Orlando’s defensive identity.

Jett Howard is also out with an ankle sprain, though his role has been more developmental, he has served in a key rotational role off the bench, and in 22 outings since the All-Star break he has averaged 6.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 1.1 threes over 16.1 minutes per game.

The good news: Wendell Carter Jr. is available despite a nasal fracture and will play with a mask. Carter has averaged roughly 11points and 7 rebounds this season, providing stability in the frontcourt. His presence is critical, especially with Isaac unavailable, as Orlando leans more heavily on its starting unit to maintain defensive structure.

Charlotte Hornets: Stars Are Healthy, But Rotation Is Weak

Charlotte’s injury report is less about star absences and more about lack of depth. The most notable loss is PJ Hall, who is sidelined following ankle surgery. Hall underwent a procedure to address a fractured right ankle and will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign.

Miami Heat: Managing Through Attrition

Miami once again finds itself navigating a crowded injury report, but unlike some opponents, most of its core rotation remains available.

Tyler Herro has been dealing with foot soreness but is expected to play and remains a central offensive piece, averaging around 20+ points per game with strong perimeter shooting. His shot-making is vital in half-court playoff-style possessions.

The Heat will also have Andrew Wiggins who’s been managing a toe injury and Norman Powell with groin soreness available, both are key wings who can create their own offense. Davion Mitchell has been on the injured list with a shoulder contusion adds perimeter defense and ball pressure.

However, Miami’s depth takes a hit with multiple rotational or fringe contributors sidelined, including Nikola Jovic and Simone Fontecchio to ankle injuries. While not stars, their absence limits lineup flexibility, something Miami typically leverages in postseason matchups.
