Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris is dealing with an eye injury sustained on the Fourth of July, and while the full extent remains unclear, early indications suggest he is likely to miss the start of training camp.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Harris is not expected to be ready when camp opens. That prompted a reaction from former NFL team physician Dr. David Chao, Pro Football Doc, who offered his early analysis based on available information.
“It may be a superficial eye injury,” Chao said. “In other words, it’s not deep in the back of the eye, which hopefully means it’s not a detached retina — but more likely a corneal abrasion.”
The injury reportedly occurred during July 4 celebrations and may have been caused by fireworks particles or a flash burn. While the injury is believed to be external rather than internal, that does not make it trivial.
“Just because it’s superficial doesn’t mean it’s nothing,” Chao said. “Binocular vision is critical for depth perception, especially for a running back who has to track defenders, pick up blitzers and react in tight windows.”
Chao said Harris could currently be wearing an eye patch, a typical treatment for corneal abrasions. He noted that while the long-term outlook might be positive, the immediate effect on Harris' readiness is real.
“It’s pretty clear he won’t be there for training camp,” Chao said. “We hope it’s a ‘nothing burger,’ but the vision aspect makes it significant.”
He went on to illustrate the importance of binocular vision with a simple test: try touching two fingers together with one eye closed. The lack of depth perception makes it awkward and imprecise — not ideal for a high-level NFL athlete.
While Harris may ultimately be ready for Week 1, any disruption to his vision or training schedule is worth monitoring. A temporary eye issue could affect everything from ball tracking to pass protection. Depth perception is not just important, it is essential.
Chao also offered a note of caution about the broader implications of fireworks-related injuries and extended his thoughts to anyone affected more seriously.
“This should serve as a reminder every decade, be careful,” Chao said. “We’re hoping this is minor, but we don’t yet have enough info to feel safe.”
