Mason Graham: Top Rated Defensive Tackle Skips On-Field Work at Combine

The top rated defensive lineman in this years draft, Mason Graham has impressed scouts with his play, but not so much on paper, he’s slightly underweight at his position compared to other A-list prospects in his position, but has still managed to earn the right to be a top draft pick.

Graham’s Dominance Transcends Traditional Size Standards for Elite Defensive Tackles

Because he doesn’t fit the prototypical frame of an elite defensive tackle, his performance at the combine may not matter as much as it would for other player since he’s so highly coveted. At 6’3” and 320lbs, he is by no means a small man, but given prospects like his teammate, Kenneth Grant, also 6’3” but a slightly more imposing 342lbs, scouts would it if Graham was physically more of a menace. That doesn’t stop him from being a disruptive force though. Graham plays with great leverage and aggression, key to being a type of defensive tackle that can blow up opposing offensive pass and run blocking schemes.

In 39 college appearances, he’s started 27 games and amassed 60 solo tackles and 9 sacks at Michigan. He has a relatively clean injury history so he’s proven to be a very durable. He sustained a broken thumb in the week 3 of the 2023 season and missed two weeks but returned and played with a club. He’s appeared on the injury list for undisclosed reasons before, but didn’t miss any time in the 2024 season where he posted 45 tackles, 7 for loss and 3.5 sacks to end his college career.

How Did Graham Perform at the Combine?

Mason Graham opted out of on-field work at the NFL Combine but he did participate in the bench press. He was among the leaders at his position group with 24 reps of 225lbs. Mason Graham will perform the rest of the on-field testing at his Pro-Day. Graham is the kind of player who can have a major impact on defense without garnering very many trackable statistics.
