Los Angeles Chargers' star quarterback, Justin Herbert, has been diagnosed with a mild right high ankle sprain following the team's Week 2 victory against the Carolina Panthers.
By video, he was trapped underneath a defender and externally rotated his ankle during the third quarter. It was not a clear view but appears to be a mild high ankle sprain.
This week his practice report was DNP, LP, DNP and was seen with his ankle heavily taped which leaves his status as Questionable for the Week 3 game against the Steelers.
"Every day it's been getting better," Herbert said. "It's just getting it to a point where you feel comfortable going out there and being able to move.
Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh added: "Justin's doing everything necessary to be able to play on Sunday."
We at Sports Injury Central believe it remains possible that he can play through the injury. Herbert has a history to try and play through injury including with a rib fracture in the past. In addition, given his more limited role in Jim Harbaugh's and Greg Roman's new offense, he is likely going to try and play.
As high ankle sprains can take longer to heal compared to traditional ankle injuries, Herbert will be managing this injury for several weeks. His injury will be something to keep an eye on, as high ankle sprains can linger throughout the season, meaning he'll be less mobile than usual.
