On Saturday March 8 during a high-stakes matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, Lakers' star forward LeBron James exited the game due to a left groin strain. This injury has raised concerns about the Lakers' momentum and their positioning in the Western Conference standings as we approach the run to the playoffs.
The injury occurred with 6:44 remaining in the fourth quarter as James maneuvered around Celtics' guard Jaylen Brown. Following the play, James appeared to be in discomfort and promptly left the court, heading to the locker room. At that juncture, he had contributed 22 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists.
This isn't the first time James has encountered a groin injury. In the 2018-2019 season, he suffered a similar ailment that sidelined him for 17 games, during which the Lakers' performance notably declined, leading to them missing the playoffs.
The Lakers, boasting a 40-22 record and holding the third spot in the Western Conference, are in a critical phase of the season. James' absence could significantly impact their playoff aspirations, especially considering the tight standings in the conference. The team will need to rely heavily on other key players, notably Luka Doncic, who tallied 34 points and eight rebounds in the recent game against the Celtics.
James has said there is "not much concern" however he is slated to undergo further medical evaluations to determine the injury's severity and establish a recovery timeline. A groin strain is likely to have a significant impact on his movement and explosiveness around the court, and it is an injury which could linger; hence the team is expected to be cautious with 20 games remaining before the playoffs. We believe LeBron James will miss at least two weeks.
