(Update: Herbert underwent surgery on his left hand on Monday. The Chargers say he is day-to-day for Week 14 vs. the Eagles)

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert exited today’s game in the first half after suffering an apparent left-hand injury. The incident occurred on a scramble toward the sideline, where Herbert was hit by an opponent’s helmet, immediately shaking his non-throwing hand in visible discomfort. Medical staff evaluated him on the sideline before escorting him to the locker room for further testing. He eventually made his way back to the sideline with fingers 3 & 4 buddy-taped and after practicing a few snaps returned to the game.

Justin Herbert Hand Injury History

This new setback comes with some context, as Herbert has dealt with a notable left-hand injury before. In Week 4 of the 2023 season, he fractured the middle finger on his left hand when it was struck during a chaotic post-interception play. That injury required a splint and glove protection for several weeks, and the Chargers shifted to more shotgun formations to limit under-center snaps that stressed the hand. Despite the fracture, Herbert did not miss any games, and the injury eventually healed without reported complications.

Aside from that 2023 fracture, Herbert has no significant history of recurring left-hand issues, making today’s injury more of an isolated incident than a pattern. Still, any hand injury, throwing or non-throwing, can affect ball control, snaps, and hand-offs. The Chargers will await imaging and further evaluation to determine his status moving forward, but early concern centers on whether this is a similar fracture scenario or a new structural issue altogether.
