Justin Fields injury: Will Chicago QB Play Through Shoulder Sprain?

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields revealed to reporters that he suffered an AC joint sprain in his non-throwing shoulder in Sunday’s loss to the Falcons.

Fields can play through the injury but will likely need a pain-numbing injection, a choice that will be in the hands of him, his coach and likely the general manager.

Based on multiple angles of the hit Sunday, the Pro Football Docs detailed why the injury mechanism was consistent with a left shoulder AC joint sprain.

A sprain, by definition, involves torn ligaments and those torn AC joint ligaments are likely what Fields was referring to in his press conference on Wednesday.

He will be limited in practice all week, but can play through against the Jets with a numbing injection, according to the Pro Football Docs.

Former Chargers and Saints quarterback Drew Brees played through an AC joint sprain for a majority of the season in 2004 with San Diego.

Dr. David Chao tells the story below:

Brees was injured early in the season while facing the Titans, but opted to take a numbing injection ahead of each of the remaining games.

The Chargers 2001 second-round draft pick finished with 3,159 passing yards, 27 TDs and 7 interceptions in 15 games that season.

Fields could play through his shoulder ailment, but it will likely be up to him, the coaching staff and the general manager to decide whether it is worth it for a 3-7 Bears team.
