Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is listed as "doubtful" after suffering a right wrist injury during the team's Game 1 victory over the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla confirmed the injury Tuesday, noting the team will monitor Tatum's status closely ahead of Game 2.
According to Dr. David Chao, Pro Football Doc, the injury could be more serious than day-to-day: "Jayson Tatum has a right wrist injury, and it’s a concerning one. Thankfully, it does not appear to be a scaphoid fracture, but rather a bone bruise. Several things make this injury troubling. Bone bruises are not typically day-to-day injuries; they don’t just get better overnight. Tatum also has a history of right wrist injuries from last season, which adds to the concern." Dr. Chao continued, "Right now, he’s listed as doubtful, though that could change. This is the NBA after all. Still, it's his dominant wrist, which makes the situation more serious...The silver lining is that it’s not a weight-bearing area, but this injury can still affect his shooting, ball-handling, defense, really, his whole game. It’s definitely something to monitor for the Celtics, especially with arguably their best player on the injury report."
The Celtics lead the series 1-0 over the Magic and remain 10.5-point favorites for Game 2, even with Tatum’s injury. Interestingly, Boston is 8-2 this season without Tatum but both of those losses came against the Magic.
