Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants despite imaging showing no structural damage to his elbow. Team officials described the decision as a precaution following a setback, and Daniels will be re-evaluated next week.
Marcus Mariota will make the start as Washington looks to navigate the final stretch of a difficult season.
Daniels exited last week’s loss after landing awkwardly on his elbow, but early indications suggested the injury was not severe. “We said in real time that we didn’t think there was a significant injury,” Pro Football Doc Dr. David Chao said. “They removed the brace and checked him. Did the elbow hurt? Absolutely. Was it injured any further? I don't think so.”
Chao noted that Daniels likely could have returned to the game if needed. But with Washington trailing 17–0 and their playoff hopes already gone, the team opted to shut him down for the day. Head coach Dan Quinn later confirmed Daniels was available to return but that he chose to hold him out.
With the Commanders eliminated from postseason contention, the organization appears focused on caution rather than risking further aggravation for its rookie quarterback. Daniels’ status for Week 16 will depend on how he responds to treatment in the coming days.
