Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter missed Wednesday's practice with a wrist injury before returning to the field wearing a cast on his right wrist.

Carter said he suffered the injury while attempting to punch the ball out late in Sunday's win over the Washington Commanders. Despite the cast, Carter said he is practicing and expects to play in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans.

“I look fine out there wearing it,” Carter said. “Just minor adjustments and I’m still out there practicing and ready to play.”

Carter acknowledged that he will still need to use the injured wrist while striking, grabbing, defending the run and rushing the passer.

“I can’t let it affect me,” Carter said.

Pro Football Doc on Jalen Carter's Wrist Injury

While Carter expects to play, Pro Football Doc believes the type of cast he is wearing provides an important clue about the potential severity of the injury.

Carter is wearing a thumb-spica cast on his right wrist, which Pro Football Doc said raises concern for either a significant wrist sprain or a possible nondisplaced scaphoid fracture.

“Either this is a fairly significant wrist sprain that fortunately he played through, or is there a scaphoid fracture non-displaced,” Pro Football Doc said.

Neither injury has been officially confirmed.

How Could Jalen Carter's Wrist Cast Affect Him?

Pro Football Doc expects Carter to play against the Titans but believes the injury and cast could limit his effectiveness.

Carter relies on his hands to strike opposing linemen and create separation, and Pro Football Doc explained that the cast cannot completely protect the wrist when Carter attempts those movements.

“He will play but at less effectiveness,” Pro Football Doc said. “Even in a cast, it cannot protect your wrist fully from being able to punch out hard, and that's one of the ways he gets separation.”

If Carter does have a scaphoid fracture, Pro Football Doc said it could require a longer period in the cast and potentially surgery. However, he does not expect the injury to be season-ending.

Carter's effectiveness in Week 2 and how his wrist responds while playing in the cast will be important to monitor going forward.
