Ja Morant Exits Game 3 with Hip Injury, Status Uncertain for Saturday

Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant exited Thursday night’s 114-108 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder after suffering a hip injury late in the second quarter. The injury occurred with 3:15 remaining when Morant crashed hard to the court following a foul by Thunder guard Lu Dort during a high-flying fast-break attempt.

Morant did not return to the game and was later seen on crutches in the tunnel near the Memphis bench during the fourth quarter. Interim head coach Tuomas Iisalo told reporters that Morant’s availability for Saturday’s potential elimination game is currently uncertain.

According to Dr. David Chao, Pro Football Doc, the injury appeared severe in the moment but may be more of a scare than a serious setback. Similar to the recent injury to Jimmy Butler, this may be a case of being hurt more than injured, something painful and limiting, but likely short-term and not structural. The Grizzlies are down 3-0 and have a short turnaround with Game 4 on Saturday. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Morant is not expected to play in Game 4.
