Duke starting guard Caleb Foster suffered a right foot injury and underwent surgery, coach Jon Scheyer announced, leaving his status for the NCAA Tournament in doubt.
Scheyer did not provide a specific timetable for Foster’s return, saying only that he will miss “foreseeable" time. Asked whether Foster could return at some point during the NCAA Tournament, Scheyer said Duke would likely need to make a deep run for that to become a possibility.
Dr. David Chao, known as Pro Football Doc, said based on video review that Foster did not appear to suffer an acute fracture. Instead, Chao said the injury looked more like a re-aggravation of the stress fracture in the same foot that Foster dealt with during his freshman season. In Chao’s view, that likely puts Foster out for the NCAA Tournament.
Foster was injured in the first half of Duke’s victory over North Carolina. The sophomore is averaging 8.5 points and nearly three assists per game this season for the Blue Devils.
Scheyer also said center Patrick Ngongba II will miss the ACC Tournament because of ongoing foot soreness, though he remains hopeful Ngongba will return for the NCAA Tournament. Ngongba is averaging 10.7 points and 6.0 rebounds this season.
Despite the injuries, Duke is still expected to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament regardless of how it fares in the ACC Tournament.
