In a matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, the New York Giants' running backs accumulated 22 yards on eight carries. The absence of running back Saquon Barkley left the Giants without their primary offensive spark.
The Giants' top rusher was reported to have been sidelined for Thursday night's game due to an ankle sprain. However, Barkley confirmed to Amazon on Thursday that he has a high ankle sprain.
The Giants have expressed optimism about Barkley's recovery, labeling him a "fast healer." Giants coach Brian Daboll said he has shown significant progress since sustaining the initial injury on Sunday.
Barkley is expected to be sidelined for approximately three weeks, per Adam Schefter.
According to the Pro Football Docs, Barkley's high ankle injury will likely affect his performance for the remainder of the season unless he takes about a month to recover fully.
Rushing his rehabilitation could diminish his explosiveness and pose a risk of reinjury, a scenario reminiscent of his three-game absence due to an ankle sprain in 2021.
Barkley, who boasts a SIC score of 10, had an impressive start to the season, amassing 29 carries for 114 yards and scoring a touchdown in the first two games. Additionally, he contributed nine catches for 41 yards and another touchdown.
Following their loss to the 49ers by a score of 30-12, the Giants now hold a 1-2 record for the season.
