After being shut down for the season in February, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is now scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery. According to Dr. David Chao (Pro Football Doc), the news is actually encouraging, as earlier rumors pointed to a possible meniscus or cartilage transplant a much more serious procedure.
A standard knee scope typically comes with a relatively quick recovery, and Embiid is expected to be reevaluated in six weeks. That’s a far more optimistic timeline than a transplant surgery, which could have impacted the start of next season and potentially posed a threat to his long-term career.
Still, there’s reason to be cautious. Embiid has a long history of knee problems, particularly involving the lateral meniscus, and Dr. Chao notes that if a simple scope was all he needed, the team likely would have gone ahead with it back in February to prepare for a playoff return.
For now, there’s hope that the procedure is minor but if more is needed, it could spell further trouble for Embiid. Dr. Chao concludes that the former MVP is "destined for a career of load management at best."
