(Update: Gabriel did not return to the game and Pro Football Doc says that Gabriel's delayed symptoms mean there is a good chance Gabriel will miss next week and Shedeur Sanders will get the start.)
In today’s game, quarterback Dillon Gabriel left the field before halftime to undergo evaluation for a possible concussion. Video analysis revealed that Gabriel sustained a hard hit during a scramble but continued playing for two plays before the evaluation. Subsequently, the Cleveland Browns removed him from action and initiated concussion protocol. In his absence, Shedeur Sanders made his NFL debut in the second half.
Gabriel has a history of head injuries. During his time at Oklahoma, he exited a game against TCU in 2022 after a brutal hit to the head while sliding, prompting him to enter concussion protocol. He missed the subsequent game while undergoing evaluation. In the 2023 season, Gabriel again left a game early against BYU with a head injury.
Beyond his concussion history, Gabriel has also faced other serious injuries in college. In 2021, while playing for UCF, he broke his left clavicle during a lateral play. This injury ended his season, but surgery was not necessary. Today’s situation marks another significant health milestone for Gabriel early in his professional career. The Browns will closely monitor his progress through the concussion protocol as he works toward clearance and a potential return to the field with the Browns Week 12 game being next Sunday in Las Vegas against the Raiders.
Shedeur’s career begins with an inauspicious start with his first two drives ending in a lost fumble, then an interception.
