Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones is already dropping back and throwing just four months after rupturing his right Achilles, an encouraging sign as the team begins offseason workouts.
Jones ruptured the Achilles on Dec. 7 and underwent surgery shortly afterward. Colts coach Shane Steichen said the team expects Jones to be ready for the start of training camp, an outlook that aligns with what Pro Football Doc has said about the quarterback’s recovery timeline. Pro Football Doc has also cautioned, however, that Jones is unlikely to be fully back to 100 percent by the start of the season.
The Colts have looked to another high-profile recovery for perspective. Jones and Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who also tore his Achilles and made a rapid return, shared the same surgeon. According to Steichen, Indianapolis has consulted the Celtics on how they handled Tatum’s rehab process.
Even with the positive progress, the Colts plan to remain cautious with Jones, who signed a two-year, $88 million contract extension in the offseason. Steichen said the team understands Jones is eager to push forward, but Indianapolis does not want to rush the process.
“I know he’s ripping and roaring and ready to go and all those things, but we’ve got to be smart,” Steichen said.
