Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott reportedly had his skin sutures removed this week following his Week 1 thumb fracture and surgery.
Prescott has hinted at a Week 5 return against the Los Angeles Rams and did not rule out a return next week against the Commanders.
However, the Pro Football Docs maintain he is unlikely to return before Week 7 because of several factors.
First, just because he can throw doesn’t mean he can grab the ball for all throws. It’s going to be difficult to throw the ball while under pressure until he has full strength return.
Second, protection of the thumb is the key and playing him two weeks before the initial six-week time frame can’t guarantee the thumb will be safe from setbacks. If the thumb is hit when not fully healed, it could cause a setback in recovery. Furthermore, just because the skin sutures are out doesn’t mean the bone is healed.
We still predict the original timeline of 6-8 weeks is a safer option. But, in two of the following three games, the team plays squads that made the playoffs last year, which may cause the Cowboys to rush Prescott.
While Prescott has been out, the Cowboys have gone 2-0. They have beaten the New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals. Their backup, Cooper Rush, has performed well, with his QBR being the sixth best in the NFL. Look for the Cowboys to ride the hot hand with Prescott unlikely to be ready in the coming weeks.
Dallas is favored by 3.5 points at home this week against the Commanders and the over/under is 42.5, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
The Cowboys are at +430 to win the NFC East, while the Commanders are at +2400.
