Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, according to Pro Football Doc Dr. David Chao.
“Hope the video lies for Austin Ekeler,” Chao posted on X. “Classic right Achilles tendon rupture. Surgery and season over.”
Ekeler went down without contact during Thursday's Commanders game vs. the Packers. Ekeler immediately clutched his right ankle before being helped off the field. An MRI is expected to confirm the diagnosis, but if Chao’s video assessment is accurate, Ekeler will undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the 2025 season.
Now in his second year with Washington, Ekeler dealt with two concussions in 2024 — one in Week 3 and another in Week 12 — before being placed on injured reserve. He finished the season having played 12 games.
Before the season began, the Commanders traded Brian Robinson Jr. to the 49ers. That leaves Washington with eighth-year veteran Jeremy McNichols, seventh-round pick Jacory Croskey-Merritt, and Chris Rodriguez, who was a healthy scratch on Thursday.
