(Update: Reports confirm Pro Football Doc's analysis that Gardner suffered a calf strain. He is considered week-to-week)

Cornerback Sauce Gardner exited Sunday’s game after suffering a calf strain, limping off the field with trainers helping him keep weight off his left leg before being taken to the locker room. By video-analysis, according to our ProFootballDoc, there is no sign of an Achilles tear at this time, suggesting that the injury is limited to the calf.

This development comes amid a recent history of lower-leg troubles for Gardner. Earlier this season, he missed a training-camp practice due to calf soreness, and coaches have repeatedly voiced caution about giving the injury time to heal before pushing him again. Although soft-tissue injuries like this don’t always lead to long-term damage, there is always concern over recurrence or worsening, especially in an athlete whose mobility and quick change of direction are critical. The Colts now face the possibility of being without their newly acquired defensive back if he’s forced to miss time, while medical staff await further tests to determine how long his recovery will take.
