The Chicago Bears faced a major setback during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions when left tackle Braxton Jones was carted off the field in the second quarter with a left ankle / knee injury.
By video, Jones suffered a left patella tendon rupture. Surgery will be required and his season is over. It will be hard for Jones to be ready for the start of next season.
The injury occurred during a pass-protection play when Lions defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike rolled onto Jones’ right leg, causing him to collapse. Medical staff stabilized Jones’ leg with an air cast before he was carted off, giving a thumbs-up to the Soldier Field crowd. He was ruled out for the game with an ankle injury.
This compounded the Bears’ woes, as left guard Teven Jenkins had exited earlier with a calf injury. Losing both starters leaves the Bears' offensive line severely compromised and raises concerns about protecting quarterback Justin Fields moving forward.
Further updates on Jones’ condition are expected after medical evaluations, but the team must now adjust to a reshuffled offensive line.
Larry Borom will be the left tackle for the remainder of the game.
Stay tuned for more updates on Braxton Jones.
