In what began as an encouraging outing for the New York Giants on Sunday, rookie running back Cam Skattebo exited in the first half after suffering a fractured right tibia and fibula near the ankle, abruptly ending his breakout rookie campaign. The injury occurred on a run where Skattebo’s lower leg was trapped underneath a defender during the tackle. He was immediately tended to by trainers and carted off the field with his leg in an aircast.
#CamSkattebo @Giants LOOK AWAY Right leg/ankle tibia/fibula fracture Similar to #AidanHutchibnsn Also #AlexSmith but hopefully without infection Surgery and good recovery for next season
The loss is a significant blow to a Giants team that had found new energy behind Skattebo’s bruising yet explosive running style. Prior to the injury, the former Arizona State standout had been one of the most productive rookies of the 2025 class, giving New York a much-needed spark on the ground while proving to be a dependable receiver out of the backfield.
By video, confirmed a tibia/fibula fracture in Skattebo’s right leg, an injury that will require surgical repair to stabilize the bones, often using internal fixation such as plates or intramedullary rods. This type of injury, depending on severity and fracture pattern, typically carries a recovery timeline of 6–9 months before returning to full football activity.
When will Cam Skattebo return?
While the injury is severe, it’s not without precedent. Similar lower-leg fractures have been seen in players such as Aidan Hutchinson and Alex Smith, though the latter’s case was complicated by post-surgical infection that dramatically extended his recovery time. As long as Skattebo avoids setbacks such as an infection, his prognosis for a full return to be ready for the 2026 NFL season is favorable.
Cam Skattebo will be out for the season with his lower leg injury. It's similar to Alex Smith/Aidan Hutchinson, but as long as there's no infection like Smith's, it's a surgery and a smooth recovery, like Hutchinson's.
