BYU Injury report: Will BYU Have to Play Its Third-String QB?

The BYU Cougars went 7-5 this season and punched their ticket to the New Mexico Bowl versus SMU (7-5). SMU is favored by 3.5 points, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.  But injuries to the team’s quarterbacks could help SMU cover the spread.

Starting quarterback Jaren Hall has been nursing an undisclosed ailment over the past few weeks leading up to the New Mexico Bowl. He was expected to be ready to play against SMU. BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick discussed Hall’s status with the media on Tuesday.

“Yesterday, I thought he had a great chance to play. Today I’d say his chances aren’t as good as I hoped,” Roderick said.

Hall has completed 248 of 376 for 3,171 yards and 31 passing touchdowns. He’s also the team’s second-leading rusher with 346 yards and three rushing touchdowns.

If Hall is out, BYU will turn to backup quarterback Cade Fennegan, who hasn’t thrown a pass this season. Roderick didn’t want to tell who would start in Hall’s absence.

“We’re still giving all those guys reps to sort it out,” Roderick said. “Cade’s also been battling an injury that happened in practice a while back. He’s healthy, though; he’s going now. But he missed some time off, so we’re getting him going again.”

Fennegan has been battling an ankle injury this season and had a setback in November, leading up to the Boise State game.

If Fennegan is not entirely healthy, this could cause the team to play their third-string quarterback, Jacob Conover. The freshman has never completed a pass in the NCAA.

SMU vs. BYU Odds

SMU is favored by 3.5 points against BYU, and the over/under is 64.5, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
