In a frightening moment during Week 12 of the NFL season, Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler sustained a concussion in the final seconds of today's matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The injury occurred on a kickoff return when Ekeler absorbed a hard hit from Cowboys players Nick Vigil and Damone Clark. The impact left Ekeler motionless on the field, necessitating immediate medical attention.
The collision happened with just nine seconds remaining in the game. Ekeler was taken off the field and later transported to a hospital for further evaluation. Fortunately, early reports suggest the trip was precautionary
The Cowboys closed out the game with a 34-26 victory, capitalizing on a series of late-game errors by the Commanders, including a failed extra point and a fumble that led to a Cowboys touchdown.
Ekeler’s injury presents a significant challenge for the Commanders' offense. Known for his versatility as a dual-threat back, Ekeler has been a key contributor this season, particularly in the passing game. Just a week prior, he posted eight receptions for 89 yards against the Eagles.
With Ekeler sidelined indefinitely, the team will need to rely heavily on Brian Robinson Jr. who also faced challenges, exiting early in the first half with an ankle injury before briefly returning and leaving again. The availability of both players will be key to monitor as the Commanders prepare for next weekend's home matchup against the Titans on Sunday.
In addition, the Commanders had two injuries to their offensive line, LT Brandon Coleman suffered a finger injury, and C Tyler Biadasz also entered the concussion protocol.
Ekeler will now enter the NFL’s concussion protocol, a structured process designed to ensure player safety before returning to play. The protocol includes multiple phases, starting with rest and progressing to increased activity only if symptoms subside. Each phase requires medical clearance, and given the nature of Ekeler’s injury, the Commanders are unlikely to rush his return. In addition for Ekeler this is his 2nd concussion he has suffered this season where he missed week 4.
Stay tuned for more updates on Austin Ekeler this week.
