Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson left Thursday’s preseason game with an injury to the pinky finger on his throwing hand and did not return.

Richardson was diagnosed with a dislocated pinky, but all X-rays came back clean, the team said. He is expected to return to the practice field in the coming days.

According to Dr. David Chao, Pro Football Doc, Richardson likely sustained a collateral ligament tear of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. The injury generally heals without surgery, and quarterbacks can play with the finger taped or “buddy taped” to an adjacent finger, with minimal effect on grip or throwing mechanics.

The pinky injury is the latest setback in Richardson’s young career. He missed organized team activities and minicamp this offseason with a shoulder injury, and the Colts signed veteran quarterback Daniel Jones. Richardson faces continued competition for the starting job as Week 1 approaches.
