Miami defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor turned his strongest season into first-round NFL Draft momentum, overcoming prior foot injuries to emerge as one of the more productive edge defenders in the 2026 class.
The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Mesidor delivered a breakout 2025 campaign, finishing with 63 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. His production, combined with his disruptive presence off the edge, has pushed him into first-round consideration, with projections placing him in the middle portion of Round 1 and beyond.
Mesidor’s rise comes despite a notable injury history. In 2023, he suffered what was described as a significant season-ending foot injury in his third game and underwent surgery that cost him part of the following offseason. He dealt with another foot issue in 2025 during Week 8 against Louisville, an injury that forced him into a walking boot and caused him to miss one game against Stanford.
He returned after that absence and played the rest of the season, showing little sign of limitation during the most important stretch of the year. Mesidor recorded four sacks during the College Football Playoff, including two in the national championship game, helping solidify his draft stock with high-level production against elite competition.
The bigger long-term question for NFL teams may be less about the injuries and more about age. Mesidor will already be 25 before he is drafted, a factor that could weigh more heavily on some front offices than his previous foot issues.
Still, Mesidor’s 2025 tape, postseason production and ability to return from injury have helped make him one of the more intriguing defensive line evaluations in the class. For teams seeking an edge rusher with proven college production and playoff-stage impact, Mesidor has made a compelling case.
