Abdul Carter enters the NFL Draft as one of the top prospects with a high ceiling as a dynamic linebacker. While concerns surrounding his shoulder have subsided his foot remains the primary health concern.
Carter was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right foot during the NFL Scouting Combine in February. At first, there was concern it might require surgery and affect his draft stock. However, after further medical evaluations, Carter and his agent decided against surgery, as the injury is healing well and should be a “non-factor” for teams ahead of the NFL Draft.
Dr. David Chao (Pro Football Doc) believes he will need to manage the injury through training camp, which could delay his full return to form during his rookie season. Dr. Chao further elaborated on the nature of such injuries among edge rushers, "Edge rushers are particularly prone to stress reactions and potentially stress fractures, especially at the fifth metatarsal outside, because they really have to get around the edge."
The foot injury isn’t considered severe enough to cause a drop in Carter’s draft stock, but it will require careful monitoring. Rehab will be ongoing, and there’s a legitimate concern that returning too soon could lead to a re-break, especially under the physical demands of an NFL schedule. That risk has teams approaching Carter’s early usage with caution. Still, the situation isn’t being compared to more serious long-term cases like Tyree Wilson, whose injuries significantly altered his career path.
Despite the rehab timeline, Carter’s long-term outlook remains positive. Carter remains resolute in his self-assessment, stating, "I feel like I'm the best player in the country, and the best player should be selected No. 1." His elite athleticism, football IQ, and ability to impact both the run and pass game make him one of the most intriguing defensive prospects in the class. While the foot injury may slightly affect his rookie season, it isn’t expected to derail his career or draft positioning.
