Michael Gallup had surgery to repair his torn left knee ACL in mid-February, indicating he likely had damage to his MCL as well.Given the delayed surgery, the Cowboys wide receiver turned free agent is unlikely to be anywhere near 100% for the start of next season, said Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc.Gallup tore his left ACL on Jan. 2 and reportedly had surgery Feb. 10. It is common to delay ACL surgery somewhat to regain range of motion and strength through pre-hab, or rehabilitation before surgery, Chao said. The delay likely meant there was an MCL sprain that was allowed to heal on its own before performing surgery on the ACL, Chao said. The recovery timeline begins from the date of surgery, not the date of injury, thus Gallup will be nearly 7 months post surgery by the time next NFL season starts. No two ACL recovery is the same, but that doesn't give Gallup great odds to be ready for Week 1, Chao said.It remains to be seen where Gallup will end up in free agency, but he is unlikely to be productive in the first half of next season.
