The Steelers ruled out all-pro edge rusher T.J. Watt from Sunday's preseason finale with a left knee injury.
Based on initial video the injury doesn't appear severe and isn't likely to have to long-term consequences, but the Pro Football Docs have worry for a low-grade left knee MCL sprain.
Depending on the severity, Watt could be limited or absent Week 1.
Steelers' coach Mike Tomlin said at halftime of the broadcast that Watt would likely have stayed in the contest if it were a regular season game.
Further testing, however, will likely determine the length of his potential absence.
Watt suffered the apparent injury when Lions' tight end T.J. Hockenson leveled a low cut block in the first quarter. Watt initially stayed in the game for another series but was moving gingerly.
Giants' rookie defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux suffered a Grade 1 MCL sprain on a similar play last weekend when tight end Thaddeus Moss set a chop block for a running back, falling into Thibodeaux's right knee.
That play, while dangerous, is still a legal and effective play.
Pittsburgh opens its 2022 season two weeks from today in Cincinnati against the defending AFC North winning Bengals.
