Jameson Williams, the star Alabama wide receiver and top prospect in this year's draft, suffered a torn ACL in his left knee 53 days ago.Recently, there were rumors that he is ahead of schedule in his recovery, but Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, said that assessment may be premature.I think he's draftable, but it is unrealistic to expect him to be ready for Week 1, Chao said.Everyone wants to see the Alabama standout back on the field this fall, but Williams faces a long road to get there.ACL recoveries typically take anywhere from 9-12 months for a return to play. Williams isn't even at the end of his second month since surgery.Once Williams is able to return to play, the key becomes when he will have confidence making decisive cuts with his left leg, Chao said.Odell Beckham Jr., the 29-year-old Rams wide receiver, suffered a torn ACL in October 2020 and didn't return to action until late September last year. Even then, it took Beckham until the second half of the year to look like his usual self when running routes, Chao said.Williams ceiling is still very high and teams should not shy away from drafting him, but they should do so with the knowledge that he will not be right until the second half of the season at the earliest, Chao said. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene after transferring to Alabama last season, collecting 79 catches for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. Prior to that, he had just 15 catches for 266 yards at Ohio State. At 6-foot-2, roughly 190 pounds, Williams projects as a late first round draft pick. His speed and route-running ability will be key to his success in the NFL, but those may not materialize in his first year post-ACL surgery.Injury history data provided by the 2022 rookie injury guide written by Dr. Ethan Turner, PT, DPT.
