The Washington Commanders' rookie was recently activated off the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list. Newton had surgery on his right foot earlier this offseason and is now set for a similar procedure on his left foot. Originally injuring his right foot with a Jones fracture at the University of Illinois, he played through it until undergoing surgery in January. The recurrence of this injury in his left foot necessitated additional surgery. These surgeries may have played a role in Newton slipping from a potential first-round pick to the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, where he was chosen 36th overall by the Commanders. He is expected to ramp up during training camp and is a bit behind after missing all of rookie camp but has the potential to produce on a defensive line group that has been dominated by Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne for years.
