UPDATE: Seahawks HC Mike McDonald announced that Charbonnet will undergo surgery and is out for the playoffs. Charbonnet suffered a torn ACL.
Seattle Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet exited the NFC Divisional Round playoff game Saturday night against the San Francisco 49ers with a knee injury, leaving the field awkwardly during a second-quarter run and heading immediately to the medical tent before ultimately not returning to the contest. His absence came in a dominant 41-6 victory that propelled Seattle into the NFC Championship Game, but his health now looms as a key storyline heading into next week’s matchup.
Charbonnet, who had logged 20 yards on five touches before the injury, suffered the issue on a short yardage play where he came up limping and was evaluated by Seahawks medical staff. He remained questionable to return during the game before ultimately departing for good.
Following the game, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald addressed Charbonnet’s injury in his postgame press availability, noting that the running back would undergo further imaging on his knee, including MRI evaluations, to determine the full extent of the damage. Early indications from the team are optimistic that there is no major structural damage, but Charbonnet’s availability for the NFC Championship remains undetermined as Seattle waits for imaging results and week-long practices to unfold.
Charbonnet’s status is particularly significant given his role in one of the NFL’s top ground attacks this season. Though he did not start many games, the former second-round pick finished the regular season with a strong statistical footprint, contributing 730 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, while forming a potent one-two punch with Kenneth Walker III.
With Charbonnet sidelined for the remainder of Saturday’s game, Kenneth Walker III took over as the featured back, rushing for three touchdowns and helping the Seahawks maintain offensive balance en route to the lopsided win. Practice squad elevation Velus Jones Jr. saw snaps as the backup, highlighting the depth issues Seattle may have to navigate if Charbonnet’s recovery timeline extends beyond this week.
