New Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins is making significant strides in his recovery from a season-ending Achilles injury he sustained in Week 1 of the 2023 season. Dobbins tore his Achilles tendon during the Ravens' season opener, an injury that required surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
In April, Dobbins told the media he is on track to be ready for training camp in July, “I'm 100 percent now. It was like a walk in the park, it was like a sprained ankle. It was very easy, because I had the knee [injury] -- the knee was pretty hard. The Achilles was, I would say, easy, just because that's my mentality. It was pretty easy to me. I've had these injuries.”
We at sicscore.com unfortunately do not agree and believe this will be a difficult season for Dobbins. The former Raven will lack explosiveness and burst for much of the 2024 season while being relegated to a Running Back by Committee in LA. Expect him to be suited up Week 1 but to be used sparingly in his first season with the Chargers with Gus Edwards, former teammate in Baltimore, to be the 1A in the committee.
Dobbins has been plagued by injuries since his breakout rookie season. In 2021, Dobbins missed the entire season after tearing his ACL in the preseason. In 2022, he only played in 8 games after undergoing knee surgery to remove scar tissue from his previous ACL surgery. Recovering from his Achilles tear is particularly challenging for running backs, who rely heavily on explosive movements and lower body strength.
For the 2024 season, Dobbins joins the Chargers his former Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman among other former Ravens.
