Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will have season-ending surgery for his throwing shoulder, per owner Jim Irsay on Wednesday.
Richardson, the fourth overall pick, sustained a Grade 3 AC joint sprain against the Titans on Oct. 8. Initially expected to miss 4-8 weeks, the decision to end his rookie season came after consulting several specialists.
According to the Pro Football Docs, Richardson’s surgery is not to his labrum or anything involved in his throwing motion. So, he will have no lingering issues throwing in the future.
He should be close to fully healthy by the start of training camp and even has a chance to be ready for OTAs.
Richardson could have played through the injury after 8 weeks but chose surgery to correct a raised shoulder deformity from the AC joint sprain.
Colts owner Jim Irsay made a statement on Richardson’s decision to have surgery.
"After consultation with our medical staff, Anthony, and those close to him, it has been determined that he will undergo surgery to repair his injured shoulder, which will end his season," Irsay wrote in a post on X.
Richardson ends the season with four games, completing 50 of 84 passes for 577 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 136 yards on 25 carries with four touchdowns.
Colts coach Shane Steichen emphasized the decision to focus on Richardson's future: "That's a huge part of it. You take the guy fourth overall, [he's] a tremendous competitor, great player. The longevity of him needs to be at a premium, so this is the best thing for him moving forward."
