Yankees' manager Aaron Boone said after Sunday's contest that newly-acquired leftfielder Andrew Benintendi suffered a hook of hamate hand fracture and will undergo surgery.
The 28-year-old will miss 6-to-8 weeks after the surgery, potentially putting him back at the top of the order for the ALCS if the scuffling Yankees advance that far.
Benintendi underwent a hook of hamate excision nearly a decade ago after suffering the same type of break in his wrist, which reportedly caused confusion for the left-handed all-star.
According to the Pro Baseball Docs the bone didn't grow back as Benintendi asserted, and the remaining hamate bone can be broken and the portion removed multiple times.
The hook describes the shape of the broken piece caused by the bat's force on the wrist, not the location.
Benintendi was placed on the 10-day IL yesterday with right wrist inflammation after feeling a pop on a whiffed swing on Friday.
He immediately removed himself from the contest but initially didn't believe it was a broken bone because of his previous surgery.
Since New York traded for Benintendi on July 27, the seventh-year pro has a .254 average with 12 RBI and 14 runs and the Yankees are 13-20 in his 33 games.
