(Update: Victor Wembanyama will travel with the Spurs to Portland ahead of Game 3 and 4)

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama entered concussion protocol after suffering a hard fall in the second quarter of the Spurs’ Game 2 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Wembanyama remained on the floor for several minutes after the fall before getting up and running to the locker room. He was ruled out shortly afterward, and the team later confirmed he had sustained a concussion. He is scheduled to undergo further testing on Wednesday.

The injury now puts Wembanyama’s availability for the rest of the series in question, with Game 3 set for Friday in Portland after the Trail Blazers evened the series at 1-1.

Unlike the NFL, the NBA does not use a fixed timetable for concussion recovery. Instead, the league follows an individualized, graduated return-to-play process. Under the NBA’s concussion policy, a player diagnosed with a concussion cannot return for at least 48 hours, including the day of diagnosis, and cannot begin the formal exertion protocol until 24 hours after the injury.

After an initial 24-to-48-hour rest period, the player can gradually increase activity as long as symptoms do not worsen. The progression moves from stationary bike work to jogging, then agility drills and non-contact team activity. Each step must be supervised by the medical staff, and the player must remain symptom-free to advance. If symptoms return, the process stops until he can resume from the last cleared stage.

Before returning to play, the player must be symptom-free at rest, evaluated by a physician experienced in concussion management, complete the NBA’s exertion progression and have the case reviewed with the NBA Concussion Program director. Because recovery varies by player and injury, there is no standard return timeline.

According to Pro Football Doc, Wembanyama appears highly unlikely to play on Friday. Beyond that, his availability will depend on how his symptoms progress through concussion protocol. If he is still experiencing symptoms on Wednesday, his chances of being available for Game 4 would also appear unlikely.

For now, the Spurs will await the results of Wednesday’s testing and monitor how Wembanyama responds over the next several days.
