University of Connecticut sophomore superstar Paige Bueckers underwent left knee surgery Tuesday and the University announced a timetable of 8 weeks for her return, meaning she will be back for the NCAAW Tournament in March.
Bueckers, who won the Naismith Award given to the NCAA's best player in 2021, suffered an anterior tibial plateau fracture – or a fracture at the top of the shin bone connected to the knee – and lateral meniscus tear in her left knee in the waning moments of a 73-54 win over Notre Dame on Dec. 5.
After an awkward step, the 20-year-old's knee hyperextended, and she had to be carried off the court, putting no weight on her left leg. Considering the non-contact nature of the injury, it is a positive that she avoided an ACL tear, as Pro Football Doc Dr. Chao opined when the injury initially occurred.
A timeline of 8 weeks to return tells us that the surgery and recovery will be more focused on the meniscus tear, as a more severe internal knee fracture would likely mean an end to her season.
Luckily, she will be able to return soon and fully recover from her injury.
