NFL Week 8 Best Bet: Falcons vs. Buccaneers — Tampa Bay's Offense Isn't What the Scoreboard Suggests

Sometimes the final scoreboard creates a misleading perception of a team's offensive capabilities, and that's exactly what we're seeing with Tampa Bay entering Sunday's matchup against Atlanta.

The Buccaneers are coming off a 43-13 blowout victory over Carolina, but that offensive explosion was largely an illusion. Tampa Bay scored 43 points despite getting just 64 passing yards from Baker Mayfield, who attempted only 11 passes. Defensive takeaways, favorable field position and a defensive touchdown played significant roles in the blowout.

We're getting value on the under because the market is reacting to Tampa Bay's point total rather than how those points were actually produced.

Tampa Bay Is an Under Team

The underlying numbers tell a much different story than last week's scoreboard.

Tampa Bay is averaging fewer than 5 yards per offensive play this season, well below the league average of approximately 5.3. That's not the profile of an explosive offense capable of consistently sustaining scoring drives.

Defensively, however, the Buccaneers have been considerably better, allowing approximately 5 yards per play.

That's the type of statistical profile we like when looking for unders: an offense that struggles to consistently move the football paired with a defense capable of keeping opponents in check.

Tampa Bay's 43-point performance against Carolina shouldn't suddenly change how we evaluate this team. The Buccaneers rushed for 258 yards, while their defense generated turnovers and short fields that made scoring much easier.

Those opportunities aren't something we expect them to consistently replicate.

Offensive Injuries Strengthen the Under

Both teams enter this matchup with notable injury concerns, particularly on offense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • WR Emeka Egbuka (foot) — OUT: Egbuka has cleared concussion protocol but remains sidelined with a foot injury. He leads Tampa Bay with 28 receptions and two receiving touchdowns, making this a significant loss to the passing attack.

  • OT Luke Goedeke (calf) — Questionable: Missed the Carolina game and the first two practices this week before returning Friday. His availability remains important for Tampa Bay's offensive line.

  • QB Baker Mayfield (right thumb) — Available: Returned last week after missing three games with a dislocated throwing thumb. Although he practiced fully this week, he attempted just 11 passes against Carolina.

  • RB Kenneth Gainwell (hip) — Limited: Another injury concern in the backfield, although his participation improved during the week to FP on Friday.

Atlanta Falcons

  • RB Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) — Likely OUT: Will miss his second consecutive game, reducing Atlanta's running back depth.

  • WR Olamide Zaccheaus (shoulder) — Questionable: Was limited throughout the week, creating another potential issue in the receiving corps.

  • RT Jawaan Taylor (hamstring) — Limited: An offensive line injury worth monitoring against Tampa Bay's defensive front.

The absence of Egbuka is particularly important for Tampa Bay, while Atlanta's offensive injuries could make it more difficult to sustain drives against a capable Buccaneers defense.

Weather Could Make Scoring Even More Difficult

The weather in Tampa could provide another advantage for the under.

Sunday's forecast calls for cloudy conditions, showers and potentially heavy thunderstorms, with winds around 10 mph.

Rain doesn't automatically produce a low-scoring game, but wet conditions can create problems for passing offenses, particularly when it comes to ball security, timing and downfield throws.

With Tampa Bay already struggling to generate consistent offensive production, adverse weather would only make things more difficult.

We expect both teams to emphasize ball security, field position and the running game rather than taking unnecessary chances.

An Inflated Scoreboard Creates an Under Opportunity

The biggest reason we like this play is the disconnect between Tampa Bay's recent scoring output and its actual offensive efficiency.

The Buccaneers scored 43 points last week, but they didn't play anything close to a conventional 43-point offensive game. Their defense and special teams helped create favorable scoring opportunities, while Mayfield barely needed to throw the football.

Tampa Bay remains a below-average offense by yards per play, while its defense has been better than league average in that same category.

Throw in the offensive injuries on both sides, the potential for rain and a divisional matchup where both teams should be familiar with each other, and we see a game much more likely to be controlled by the defenses than the offenses.

We're not buying Tampa Bay's offensive explosion from last week. The underlying numbers suggest a much lower-scoring team, and we're happy to take advantage of a total sitting above 43.

Pick: Atlanta Falcons vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Under 43.5
