Shohei Ohtani Undergoes Surgery, Will He Be Ready for Spring Training?
2 min read • November 06, 2024
During the World Series, we reported that Shohei Ohtani was battling a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum, injuries that severely impacted his ability to play. Yet, true to his dedication and passion, Ohtani pushed through the pain, knowing surgery was likely after the season ended. Now, that expectation has become reality, as he’s undergone shoulder labrum repair surgery.
The Dodgers have announced hopes for Ohtani’s return by spring training, but given the surgery’s timing in early November, that goal may be overly ambitious. With the Dodgers scheduled to play in Japan in mid-March, the quick turnaround poses a significant challenge, and his availability for the start of spring training—and even opening day—is in serious doubt.
Interestingly, Ohtani served as a designated hitter throughout the season, and there’s a chance he may be cleared to pitch before resuming his spot in the batting lineup. If recovery goes well, we could see Ohtani back on the field in some capacity early next season. This time, however, fans might witness a twist: Ohtani taking the mound as a pitcher before making his comeback as a hitter.
