The Rays announced on Monday that star shortstop Wander Franco will undergo surgery to remove the hook of hamate fracture he suffered in his right hand and will miss 5-to-8 weeks.
The ProBaseballDocs are optimistic that Franco will be able to return in late August and be effective for the Rays during the final stretch of the season.
The hook of hamate bone fractures do not heal easily on their own, but the excision produces a reliable recovery and strong return-to-play rate.
Franco joins fellow everyday starters Brandon Lowe, Kevin Kiermaier, Manuel Margot, and Mike Zunino on the IL, but has the most sure-fire path back to the field among the group.
Franco has missed 26 games this season with hamstring and quad injuries and the Rays, 45-40, are 12-15 without their second-year star.
Franco, who was red-hot out of the gates, is batting .260 with 19 extra-base hits, 23 RBI, and 34 runs in 224 at-bats.
