Paige Bueckers is set to miss the first games of her young WNBA career. The 2025 #1 overall draft pick for the Dallas Wings will miss at least two games. She is set to miss games on May 31 vs. the Chicago Sky and June 3 at the Seattle Storm, a Commissioner’s Cup game on ESPN. She will be reevaluated after the game vs the Storm, the earliest she could return is June 6 vs the Los Angeles Sparks, 7 days after entering concussion protocol.
It is unclear when she sustained the injury as she played 36 minutes in a loss to the Chicago Sky on Thursday, May 29, but it’s possible it happened on this play in the second quarter. Tracking down an offensive rebound she appeared to knock heads with Courtney Vandersloot. Bueckers remained in the game and played her regular rotation of minutes and finished with 15 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and even tossed in 3 steals and 3 blocks.
Bueckers should not miss significant time, and there is no indication she might miss more than two games at this time, however, her loss will be a blow to the struggling Wings. Through her first six games, Bueckers is averaging 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists, two steals and one block. She's fifth in the league in assists, and among rookies is second in scoring, third in rebounding, first in assists, second in steals and tied for second in blocks.
Despite her strong start, the Wings are 1-5 and one of the lowest performing teams in the league.
Bueckers led UConn to a national championship in her final season just 54 days ago. She missed a season and a half with the Huskies due to knee injuries but this will be her first absence due to a head injury.
