The Padres placed recently-returned starting pitcher Mike Clevinger on the 15-day IL on Monday with a right triceps strain.
The 31-year-old has made three starts this season as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery.
Clevinger's 2022 debut was delayed after he began feeling right knee soreness in March. The Padres decided to be cautious with his health, as is likely the case with his current ailment, according to the ProBaseballDocs.
The Docs believe that Clevinger's right triceps strain could also be attributed to compensation as he adjusts his throwing motion and mechanics after his second reconstructive elbow surgery.
Regardless, he will need to make at least one rehab start before he can return to an already loaded San Diego pitching staff.
Blake Snell just made his own season debut, which at the time knocked fellow southpaw and top prospect Mackenzie Gore from the rotation. The 23-year-old made his sixth start on Sunday, collecting his third win and lowering his ERA to an impressive 2.06.
Expect the Padres to take their time with Clevinger's return, as they have the space to do so with Gore, as good of a spot starter as you could ask for.
Clevinger has a 3.21 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 14.1 IP this season for the surging Padres, who moved to 27-14 with a 10-1 win on Sunday.
