The Ole Miss Rebels are among the few undefeated teams left in college football at 7-0. Head coach Lane Kiffin has been elated by transfer quarterback Jaxson Dart’s elite play. But two weeks ago, the team lost transfer tight end, Michael Trigg to a broken collarbone. Trigg and Dart are both transfers from USC. They reportedly have a connection that’s deeper than on the field.
Since Trigg went out with an injury, Dart played poorly, throwing for a season-low nine completions and a 47.4% completion percentage against Auburn. His play was abysmal, but the team still ended up scoring 48 points.
According to the College Football Docs, the timeline for a broken collarbone is typically around 6-8 weeks depending on the severity. So, the earliest Trigg can return is November 19th against Arkansas, and the latest he can return is possibly the SEC championship game. His return could be essential to Ole Miss’s chance at an SEC championship berth.
Before breaking his collarbone, Trigg had 17 receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns for the Rebels.
Running Back Ulysses Bentley IV hasn’t played since the team’s September 17th game against Georgia Tech. He suffered a wrist injury that caused him not to be able to take a handoff or make catches out of the backfield. There has been a slight possibility that Grant can make his awaited return this week against LSU.
Bentley IV earned first-team All-Conference honors in the AAC while transferring to Ole Miss from SMU.
The LSU Tigers have started the season 5-2 under new head coach Brian Kelly. But, the team has missed running back Armoni Goodwin since he injured his hamstring against the University of New Mexico on September 24th. His head coach updated the media at his weekly press conference regarding Goodwin.
“We’ll practice with him on Tuesday and see what we can get. He wants to play,” Kelly said. “Our doctors have cleared him. We’ll see what volume we can get out of him, and hopefully, it goes well during the week."
Goodwin's awaited return will come to fruition this weekend. Before getting injured, Goodwin averaged 5.9 yards per carry and had five touchdowns in four games.
According to PFF, Goodwin ranks second among running backs with at least 30 carries in the SEC on yards after contact and ranks second in breakaway percentage.
LSU’s defense will be without Major Burns for their big matchup against LSU after the safety suffered a neck injury against the University of New Mexico.
The injury was reportedly supposed to keep Burns out 3-6 weeks, so his return to action is inching closer.
Since Burns has been injured, the LSU defensive backfield has allowed three quarterbacks to dominate and have only recorded one interception. Each quarterback they have faced has thrown at least 180 yards and one touchdown.
The team needs one of their best communicators back in their secondary to stop the miscommunication.
LSU is favored by 1.5 points at home against Ole Miss, and the over/under is 65.5, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
