George Kittle (San Francisco 49ers)
Injury: Torn Achilles
Kittle suffered a torn Achilles during San Francisco's playoff run, an injury that is particularly concerning for a player whose game depends on both explosiveness as a receiver and physicality as a blocker. Achilles recoveries typically require 8-12 months, and even after returning, many players need additional time before regaining their pre-injury mobility and lower-body power. Kittle will likely begin the 2026 season on the PUP list, raising questions about his availability and effectiveness early in the year. At age 32, recovery becomes even more challenging compared to younger players facing the same injury.
Tucker Kraft (Green Bay Packers)
Injury: Torn ACL, Torn Lateral Meniscus (Right Knee)
Kraft suffered a devastating knee injury in Week 9 against Carolina when a blocking assignment resulted in a significant valgus force on his right knee. The injury included both a torn ACL and a torn lateral meniscus, requiring extensive reconstructive surgery. At the time of the injury, Kraft had emerged as one of Green Bay's most important offensive weapons and was leading the team in receiving production while scoring touchdowns at an impressive rate. While younger players often recover well from ACL injuries, the added meniscus damage creates additional concerns regarding long-term knee health, durability, and whether he can immediately return to the same level of explosiveness that fueled his breakout season.
Sam LaPorta (Detroit Lions)
Injury: Herniated Disc (Required Surgery)
LaPorta's 2025 season was cut short after he suffered a herniated disc that ultimately required surgery in November. Back injuries can be particularly concerning for skill-position players because they can impact flexibility, core strength, and overall mobility. Fortunately for Detroit, LaPorta's recovery has reportedly progressed extremely well throughout the offseason. He has successfully completed rehabilitation, participated in walk-through activities, and is expected to be fully cleared by the start of training camp.
While the outlook is encouraging, spinal injuries always warrant careful monitoring, especially for a player who operates frequently in traffic and absorbs contact over the middle of the field. The Lions remain optimistic that LaPorta will enter 2026 without restrictions, and among the players featured here, he arguably carries one of the strongest short-term recovery outlooks.
Zach Ertz (Free Agent)
Injury: Torn ACL (Right Knee)
Ertz suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during a Week 14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, prematurely ending what was expected to be his final season with the Washington Commanders. While ACL recoveries have become increasingly routine, Ertz faces a more challenging path than younger players due to age and accumulated wear after 13 NFL seasons. Entering his age-35 season, the veteran tight end is rehabilitating with the intention of playing a 14th NFL campaign, but questions remain regarding how much explosiveness and mobility he can recover following the injury.
The timing of the injury also presents a challenge, as it occurred late in the season, leaving a relatively short recovery window before training camp. While Ertz has built a reputation throughout his career for professionalism and preparation, teams evaluating him in free agency will closely monitor his medical progress. His experience and reliability as a pass catcher remain attractive, but his recovery from a late-season ACL tear will likely play a major role in determining both his market and his role entering 2026.
