New York Mets Injury Report - Two Key Players Set To Miss Time

List of key New York Mets sidelined or hampered - May 30

Edwin Diaz CL, (shoulder)

Star closer Edwin Diaz is dealing with a right shoulder impingement, leading the New York Mets to initially place him on the 15-day IL. However, we at sicscore.com have significant concerns about Diaz and expect this to be an elongated absence, with a likely placement on the 60-day IL looming. While reports suggest Diaz will be back by mid-June, our panel of Pro Baseball Docs anticipates a much longer absence. The Mets bullpen is expected to struggle without their star closer, who missed the entire 2023 season due to a torn patellar tendon suffered at the WBC.

Pete Alonso 1B, (hand)

Premier power hitter Pete Alonso was struck by a 93 mph fastball on his right hand and immediately exited the 5/29 contest versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. An MRI was quickly scheduled and revealed a bone bruise, fitting our video analysis that saw no traumatic mechanism for a significant injury. Given the bone bruise, we agree with the day-to-day status, as this is now more of a pain tolerance issue. His ability to play will depend on how much pain he can tolerate. If the pain becomes unbearable, a quick 10-day IL stay could occur, but we at sicscore.com lean towards him avoiding the IL and potentially starting over the weekend.

Francisco Alvarez C, (thumb)

The Mets catcher will begin his rehab assignment in the coming days as he works his way back from a torn ligament in his throwing hand (right). Out since April 19th, expect Alvarez to need a few rehab games before suiting back up. It will take time for him to regain his offensive form, and his defense may struggle in his first few games back. However, surgery has a reliable recovery rate, so we fully expect Alvarez to be in good shape as we approach the summer months.
