As the 2025 MLB season progresses, several teams are managing injuries to key players. Here's an updated list of notable injuries:
Ketel Marte (2B): Placed on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left hamstring sustained while running out a double against the Washington Nationals. Marte will miss “a series of weeks” with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday. Marte, who recently signed a five-year, $116.5 million extension.
Reynaldo López (SP): López had been placed on the 15-day injured list and struggled in his season debut, allowing three runs against the Padres. López is now expected to miss most, if not all, of the season, but received good news Tuesday as arthroscopic surgery revealed no structural damage in his right shoulder. He’ll rest for 12 weeks before being re-evaluated around the All-Star break, putting his timeline close to a typical preseason ramp-up if cleared to throw. Manager Brian Snitker said there's hope López could return before the season ends.
Spencer Strider (RHP): Strider struck out 13 over 5⅓ innings in his second rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday and appears ready to make his Braves season debut next week. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits and two walks, hitting 97 mph with his fastball and striking out his first six batters. Strider, who had internal brace surgery last April, has allowed just two runs over 13⅔ innings in three rehab outings.
Connor Wong (C): Connor Wong broke his left pinkie on a catcher's interference in the first inning and was placed on the 10-day IL Tuesday. Blake Sabol was recalled from Triple-A, and Carlos Narváez will handle most catching duties. Manager Alex Cora called it a minor fracture and said Wong could return sooner than expected.
Justin Steele (SP): Placed on the 15-day injured list due to left elbow tendinitis after pitching seven innings on April 7 against the Rangers.
Mike Tauchman (OF): Returned to the 10-day injured list after reaggravating a right hamstring strain that he had just returned from. Likely to need at least two weeks given the recurring injury.
Spencer Arrighetti suffered a fractured right thumb after being hit by a line drive during pregame warmups and is expected to miss at least a month, with his return timeline uncertain.
Yoan Moncada (3B): Placed on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb strain sustained in mid-March.
Freddie Freeman (1B): is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list and back in the Dodgers' lineup vs. the Cubs on Friday.
Blake Snell (SP): Placed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, retroactive to April 3.
Nestor Cortes (LHP): Placed on the 15-day injured list due to a flexor strain in his pitching elbow. This marks the second time in eight months Cortes has suffered this injury.
Pablo Lopez (RHP): López has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain and is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list. He suffered the injury during Tuesday night’s loss to the Royals and had hoped to make his next start against the Tigers, but the team ultimately decided not to risk it. “I take it as good news, the severity of it,” López said. “I take it as bad news because it's probably going to land me on the 15-day IL. I had to be persuaded and think logically about it. … This early in the season, it would be a pretty big risk to go out there and try to pitch in five or six days.”
DJ LeMahieu (INF): Progressing in his recovery from a left calf strain that sidelined him during his first Grapefruit League game of the spring. LeMahieu is about a week away from taking live at-bats.
Fernando Tatis Jr. (OF) exited the April 8 game against the Athletics after just four innings due to left shoulder discomfort, an area that has troubled him in the past. Tatis later said he aggravated it slightly while sliding into third base. More analysis to come.
Jackson Merrill (OF) is headed to the injured list for the first time in his career with a right hamstring strain, as the Padres opt for caution with the 21-year-old center fielder. Although Merrill was walking fine, manager Mike Shildt said the move is precautionary, noting the team wanted to “get ahead of it” as his recovery hasn’t progressed as quickly as hoped.
Victor Robles (CF): Suffered a left shoulder injury after making a spectacular catch against the San Francisco Giants. Robles had to be carted off the field and is likely to be placed on the injured list. An MRI revealed that a shoulder dislocation led to a small fracture in his shoulder. If he can avoid surgery, he may be able to return in about 12 weeks.
Ryan Bliss (2B): Bliss will miss 4–5 months after tearing his left biceps on a swing during Tuesday’s loss to the Astros. The team announced Thursday he’ll undergo surgery Friday, performed by Dr. Albert Gee at the University of Washington Medical Center.
Iván Herrera (C): Exited a game against the Boston Red Sox due to left knee inflammation sustained while running the bases. Herrera was assisted off the field and is expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list.
These injuries have prompted teams to make roster adjustments and seek contributions from other players as they navigate the early part of the season.
