New York Jets second-year quarterback Mike White reportedly has not been cleared for contact, setting up Zach Wilson to return as the starter this Sunday against the Lions.
The fact that White has not been cleared for contact suggests he is dealing with a lung issue along with his injured ribs, according to the Pro Football Docs.
Quarterbacks have played with broken ribs, but lung issues – or the risk of damage to the lungs – cannot be played through.
White reportedly has injuries to multiple ribs, which leaves his lungs vulnerable if hit the right way. The fifth-round pick told reporters as much Friday.
Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer suffered a partially collapsed lung in Week 4 and missed just one week although he wasn't cleared to fly until after the team's Week 7 bye.
White likely won't return after a one-week absence because the Jets have a short week, playing the Jaguars next Thursday. White's rib injuries could leave Wilson and Joe Flacco as the only healthy quarterbacks for the next few weeks.
White went to the hospital after taking two big hits to the ribs against the Bills in Week 14.
White has throw for 315, 369 and 268 yards – respectively – in his three starts for Wilson.
Wilson has averaged 182.7 passing yards in 7 starts this season.
The Lions (6-7) are favored by 1.5 points at home over the Jets (7-6), according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
